Output Chapter 6
Instructional Objectives Describe the four categories of output List the two monitor types Explain how monitors are connected to computers Explain the different digital TV formats List the different types of printers Explain why printer media must be used on the correct printers.
Instructional Objectives List other types of output devices. List output options for physically challenged individuals.
Output graphics text Output is data that has been processed into a useful form, called information audio video
Output Devices An output device is any component that can convey information to the user.
Display Devices CRT Monitor Flat Panel
Additive Color System Display devices use the additive color system to create all of the colors you see on the screen. Additive color use the three primary colors red, green and blue. By combining them together in specific amounts you can create all color.
Additive Color System
The Video Card An expansion card added to a PC to improve the video output.
The Video Card Ports on the video card include; 15 pin monitor port S-video port DVI port
How Video is Sent to the LCD Step 1. The CPU sends rudimentary digital video data to the video card.
How Video is Sent to the LCD Step 2. The video card’s digital-to-analog converter (DAC) converts the digital video data to an analog signal.
How Video is Sent to the LCD Step 3. The analog signal is sent as a red, green and blue signal through a cable to the LCD monitor.
How Video is Sent to the LCD Step 4. The display controller circuitry converts the red, green and blue analog signal using a analog to digital converter (ADC) to digital information. Display Controller
How Video is Sent to the LCD Step 5. The digital information is sent to the alignment layer for each of the red, green and blue sub-panel in the liquid pixel crystal Display Controller
The 15 Pin Video Connector The standard connection for a CRT or Flat Panel monitor is a 15 pin connector. It is connected into the 15 pin video port on the PC.
The DVI Video Connector The DVI connector is a multi-pin connector that sends digital information It is connected into the DVI n video port on the PC.
Digital Television There are three digital TV formats 480p digital format that has a resolution of 480 X 720 lines of resolution, same as standard TV 720p is a HDTV signal with 720 X 1280 lines of resolution. Most broadcaster use this resolution 1080p is termed complete HDTV with 1080 X 1920 lines of resolution, used in Blue Ray and X-Box systems.
Digital Television- Aspect Ratio Aspect ration refers to the width and height of the picture created. Standard TV has an aspect ration of 4:3 HDTV has an aspect ration of 16:9
Printers Printers are device that produces text and graphics on printer media. Result is hard copy, or printout
Types of Printers - Impact Impact printer that produces printed images when tiny wire pins strike ribbon Known as dot-matrix
Types of Printers – Non-impact A printer forms characters and graphics without striking paper Two major types Inkjets Laser printers
Subtractive Color Printing uses the subtractive color process. The ink colors used are cyan, magenta, and yellow plus black. This is called the CYMK system. As white light strikes the ink on the surface colors are absorbed and what is left is what you see.
Subtractive Color
Inkjet Printers Sprays tiny drops of liquid ink onto paper This is a cold process
Inkjet Cartridges Two cartridge systems 3 – 4 cartridge systems Photo cartridge systems
Laser Printers Uses toner to create the image This is a hot process
How a laser printer work Laser printers 1: Drum rotates as paper is fed through rotating mirror drum rollers rotating mirror drum rotating mirror drum rotating mirror drum drum 2: Mirror deflects laser beam across surface of drum 3: Laser beam creates charge that causes toner to stick to drum 4: As drum rotates, toner transfers from drum to paper 5: Rollers use heat and pressure to fuse toner to paper
Printing Media Specific types of media for specific types of printers Plane paper Coated paper Photographic paper Transparencies Misc
Thermal Printers Generates images by pushing electrically heated pins against heat-sensitive paper One specific type of thermal printer is the label printer
Dye-sublimation Printers Uses heat to transfer dye to specially coated paper Used to create high quality photographs
Plotters Sophisticated printer used to produce high-quality drawings Large-format creates photo-realistic-quality color prints
Facsimile (fax) machine Device that transmits and receives documents over telephone lines
Multifunction Peripheral Provides functionality of printer, scanner, copy machine, and fax machine
Data Projector Device that takes image from computer screen and projects it onto larger screen
Output Options for Physically Challenged Magnifier programs for the desktop Windows settings to increase readability Voice and brail output
