Scientific and Engineering Methods Asking Questions The Essential question and or the Anchoring event for the unit needs to be investigated/answered using both methods. Questions follow a structured narrative. Essential Question Investigation question Focus Questions These questions can be teacher derived or student derived depending on their degree of processing ability.
Scientific and Engineering Methods Do Background Research Lower processing students Teacher should research articles for students Students can annotate the text In cooperative learning groups As a class using DII instruction Information from research can be used as evidence or clues to conduct a hypothesis or specify requirements for their model. Youtube videos are a good sources of information.
Investigation Through Inquiry Engineering Method Scientific Method Specify Requirements From the investigation students create a model. From investigation students apply information to an existing model. Requirements are derived from data from research or experimentation. Construct a Hypothesis Through investigation of objects such as model(s), short experiment, or photo modules. Students are given the “WHATs” and are asked to explain a “HOW”. Students look for connections between the “WHATs” Cause and Effect Patterns
Revising Experiment and Model Scientific Method Engineering Method Test with an Experiment Teacher sets up experiment for student to gather data/information. Student performs experiment to revise model. Brainstorm, Evaluate and Choose a Solution As a group, students will evaluate the data/information to revise model.
Supporting Claim with Evidence Scientific Method Engineering Method Analyze Data and Draw Conclusions Revise claim and support with evidence. Students write an explanation of the process or phenomenon under investigation. Test Solution Using the requirements and/or parameters, students test their model against their hypothesis. Students write their claim for the process or sequence. Support with evidence from the model and/or research.
Scientific and Engineering Methods Communicate Results Results is communicated via assessments. Common Formative Assessments Investigation questions Focus Questions Common Summative Assessments Five paragraph essay that answers the Essential Question. Project that answers the Essential Question.
