How did the War of 1812 affect the new nation? Essential Question: How did the War of 1812 affect the new nation?

The Star Spangled Banner Please stand for the National Anthem of the United States of America

The Star Spangled Banner Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Vocabulary prosperity - economic success and security nationalism -a devotion to one’s country foreign policy -a government’s action toward other nations

Trouble with Britain In 1808 Britain and France were at war. Our new president, James Madison tried to keep the United States neutral. He wanted the Americans to keep trading with both Britain and France.

British vs America The British felt the Americans should side with them in the war. The US did not want to be involved. Once again, Britain and America became enemies.

Power To show its power, England set up a blockade of the European coast. The French also set up a blockade of the British Isles. American ships could not trade with either country.

Impressment British officers would raid American ships looking for British sailors on the ships because Americans paid them more money to work. Sometimes American sailors were caught and forced to serve in the British navy. This was known as impressment and the American government became very angry.

Meanwhile… Americans were moving west and making settlements in the frontier. American Indians were being pushed from their land and were fighting with the settlers. It was believed that British colonies in Canada were supplying the Indians with weapons.

Tecumseh Tecumseh was a Shawnee chief who wanted to unite all the American Indian nations west of the Appalachian Mts. to keep settlers away.

Battle of Tippecanoe Tecumseh and over 1,000 followers were attacked by American soldiers in 1811 and defeated at their Tippecanoe settlement.

US Declares War The United States declared war on Britain in 1812. They wanted to stop impressment and they wanted the British to stop arming the Indians.

British Invasions Most of the beginning battles took place near Canada. The American Indians were allies with the British in Canada. They kept the US army from invading Canada. In 1814, the British attacked Washington DC and burned the White House. Dolly Madison, wife of President Madison, managed to save the famous painting of George Washington.

Fort McHenry In 1814, the British navy fired on Fort McHenry. As Francis Scott Key watched the battle, he saw the American Flag flying and was inspired to write “The Star Spangled Banner”. Today it is our national anthem.

Treaty of Ghent After fighting for a couple of years, the British and the Americans realized that neither side was winning or gaining anything from fighting. The British and Americans signed a peace treaty . Neither side gained land. A few days later, unknowing British soldiers were defeated in New Orleans.

A New Sense of Pride After the war, the Americans had an increase in patriotism for their country. It was a time of prosperity and was known as the Era Of Good Feelings. People had a new sense of nationalism and showed great pride in their country.

Power of the US The United States showed it could stand up to Britain and act as a major power after the War of 1812. President Monroe worried that other countries would invade America, so he created a foreign policy. The Monroe Doctrine warned Europeans to stay out of North and South America. The US would also stay out of Europe.

How did the War of 1812 affect the new nation? Essential Question: How did the War of 1812 affect the new nation?

Effects of the War Americans developed a sense of nationalism. US showed it could stand up to Britain and that it was a major power in the world. Monroe Doctrine was written. It showed the world that the US was powerful.
