Sustainable Entrepreneurship BU6019 (Session 10) “Sustainability Policing” and Assignment Guidance

Q: How do we “Police” sustainability? To begin! Q: How do we “Police” sustainability? Who is doing what? Where is this activity taking place? How is the “policing” being done? When is this activity being undertaken And... why is it being done? Some very important aspects to discuss later, but first some guidance for your assignment

Consider: Your BU6019 assignment one! Submission, electronically, before 12pm noon on the submission date APA Referencing/text books/journals/articles/websites, etc One industry sector to be chosen! Real life examples to be used Refer to topics, concepts and tools discussed in our sessions Critically evaluate the above “Apply” tools discussed to your chosen sector/ real life examples (rather than just discuss what the tools are!)

Your Structure! You should use the following structure please, which is suitable for a formal report in any workplace!: Title Page (Names/module/date etc) Contents Page 1.0 Terms of Reference (i.e. Introductory section such as “The Purpose of this report is to …) 2.0 Procedure (What steps you have taken to collect your information – in brief) 3.0 Findings (What have you found out, as a result of your procedure? Sub-headings may be used e.g. 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and so on) 4.0 Conclusions (never any new information in this section) 5.0 Recommendations (e.g. It is recommended that …) 6.0 Appendices 7.0 References

Structure, organisation and presentation of the report

A Starting Point! Look over all slides, Handouts, and written notes taken during sessions and the photocopied “articles” I have given out during sessions – These will all help! (e.g ideas/web links/laws/organisations, etc) Then, conduct your own research/wider reading to create argument and discussion - and to provide evidence of wider reading! Also, look at the written notes you took from the talks from our two guest speakers! These points could be extremely useful!

Some tools/theories/concepts to reflect upon: The 3 pillars of sustainability Porter's Value Chain Analysis (and how sustainability links to this!) Strategic Planning (3 steps) SMART objectives PESTLE, SWOT analyses – and the importance of resulting Action Plans! The Balanced Scorecard “Stakeholder Mapping” matrix The Transformation Process Model/ 5 x Performance objectives

Tools/theories/concepts continued... Ghoshal's 3 Ps Model The Triple Bottom Line Cost/Benefit Analysis

Think about: It's good to think! Definitions of sustainability/Sustainability Development Whose problem is it? Behaviours/”Sense of Place” The Holistic approach! Social Costs and Social Benefits SIGs (Special Interest Groups) Collective action/future solutions! Management actions!

Bricolage (read up on this!) Continued: Problem solving Bricolage (read up on this!) How different Departments (or Functions)can be involved FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) Stakeholder Perception Sustainability “policing”

Organisations may wish to link to sustainability in order to: Achieve competitive advantage Enhance their reputation Reduce costs Obtain positive stakeholder views Become environmentally friendly (“Green”)

What part does your chosen sector play with regard to: Extinction of species Climate change (if you believe in this!) Pollution Inequality Poverty And …protecting future generations! Remember that you can develop an argument within your discussion! (For example, what GOOD things/BENEFITS does it also provide?)

Sustainability Policing – Please examine: Appropriate legislation (e.g. Environmental Protection Acts/ROHS, etc) The Nature Conservancy SIGs Environmental Management for Sustainable Development (EMSD) - journals United Nations The Environment Agency

International Institute for Sustainable Development Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Green Guard Environmental Institute DEFRA/IAASTD, etc (ie International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development Friends of the Earth …. and who else??

Best of luck with your assignment! And finally... In preparation for your assignment and the world of work, please research into who will be “Policing” sustainability in your chosen sector! Best of luck with your assignment! Now, for the rest of the session, lets explore “Sustainability Policing” in more detail
