Soda+Mentos=Science By Richard Geib That science kid who lives down the street. Completed December, 7 2014

Scientific Question How much liquid is turned to gas when Mentos are applied to soda ?

Why did I chose this experiment? I chose this project for three reasons. 1: I want to to have a reason to make a big chemical reaction. 2: I love the reaction of soda and Mentos, but I didn’t want to use the overused experiments with it, leading me to choose this one. 3: I love the science behind the reaction.

Hypothesis If Pepsi, Coke-a-Cola, Sprite, and Mountain Dew have Mentos applied to them, Coke-a-Cola will have the most liquid turned to gas.

Variables Independent variable: The type of soda Dependent variables: Liquid that was turned into gas Constant variables:Type of Mentos, amount of soda, and amount of mentos.

Procedure Step 1:Get out and open a 7.5oz. soda can Step 2:Put can of soda into a bowl Step 3:Insert 4 Mentos into the soda can Step 4:Wait 10 seconds to let reaction occur Step 5:Remove Mentos from the soda Step 6:Pour soda from bowl and can into graduated cylinder Step 7:Subtract new amount of soda from old amount of soda (the amount of soda in the can as shown on the can) to get amount of liquid turned into gas Step 8:Record Data Step 9:Rinse equipment Step 10:Do again with other sodas

Data Unfortunately, there was not a large enough result to turn a noticeable amount of liquid into gas. However, it is most likely Mountain Dew released the least liquid as gas. It released so little gas that no liquid went over the top of the can. Note:Gas was released, but very little liquid turned into gas. Conclusion My question was which soda releases the most liquid as gas when Mentos are applied. My experiment to put this question on trial was to apply Mentos to a can of soda. Then, after the reaction, measure how much liquid was turned to gas. I would do this by subtracting the amount of soda after the reaction form the amount before to find the amount of soda turned to gas. Unfortunately, no noticeable amount of liquid was released as gas. My data does not validate or disprove my experiment. I can not tell if Coke-a-Cola released the most liquid as gas because it released an unnoticeable amount of gas as liquid like all the other sodas. One thing I learned in this experiment was the extraordinary amount of gas released by the Mentos that can make a geyser takes away barely any liquid. Finally, an improvement I would make would be to use a larger amount of soda because then there would be more carbon in the soda to remove resulting in more liquid released as gas
