Learning Goal: Get a realistic idea about how computer careers compare to other careers. In class warm up: Write lines of code for each of these: take a number, x, divide it by 12, and put it in x take a number, x, and take 25% of that number and put it in x
Instructions: 1. Download the file ‘salaries’ from http://cgenest.weebly.com 2. sort the entire table by salary Be sure to select the whole table before you sort it. Otherwise the columns get mixed up. Color the four quartiles by income somehow. For example: red for the lowest 25% salaries (things like minimum wage jobs) yellow for the next highest 25% of the table green for the next higher 25% of the table blue for the highest 25% of the table (things like doctors) The exact coloring appearance is up to you, as long as we can clearly see which jobs have the highest and lowest pay. 3. add a column named something like “monthly pay (gross)” Put a formula in that will take your annual salary gross , divide it by 12, and store it here. 4. add a column named something like “my monthly housing budget” This should have a formula that will take your monthly gross and take 28% of it. This is a common rule of thumb for budgeting how much housing a person can afford.
5. Below is the formula for calculating a monthly mortgage Where M is your monthly payment. P is the price of totally buying the house, in dollars. r is 0.005, your monthly interest rate, calculated by dividing your annual interest rate (assumed to be 6%) by 12. n is 360, the number of payments (the number of months you will be paying the loan) Rearrange this formula to set it equal to P (that is, “isolate P”) Make your Excel sheet calculate take the “my monthly housing budget” and feed it into your new formula. Save it in a column called something like “price of house I can afford” Use copy and paste to put this formula into every cell in Column G. Don’t worry about re-typing it; Excell automatically changes the formula by ‘relative addressing’ to save you from re-typing the cell addresses each time. You can fill the whole column G with your formula in less than ten seconds. . .
6. Choose three job titles: At least one should be in the lowest 25% of salaries on your spreadsheet and at least one should be computer related. Write them down: ____________
7. On your spreadsheet highlight or otherwise mark computer related jobs An efficient way to find these on the spreadsheet is to press Ctl-f and type in ‘computer’
8. Find houses you can afford with each of the three salaries for the three jobs you chose in #6. Go to Zillow.com Enter a zip code or street address. Click around and you will find housing prices. Play around and browse. Look up houses in other cities or houses from your past. . . For lower paying jobs, you may have better luck finding housing at a place like Craigslist rentals (https://madison.craigslist.org/search/hhh) [use the price filters on the left].
9. When we present these on Tuesday, we will play them on 30 second auto advance. Try setting this on your ppt now. On my version of Windows this done by pressing Transitions -> Advance Slide (after 00:30.00)
10. Make three slides out of the next three pages. Instructions Anything pink should be replaced by your own content. Pink squares should be replaced by appropriate images Change fonts, colors, formatting and the look as much as you want to reflect your own preferences. Move all your three slides to the FRONT of this ppt, so they play first, before these white instruction slides. (Slide sorter is a good button for that. It’s at the bottom of the screen on the right.) Rename this file as ‘your-first-and-last-name_careers’, i.e. johnsmith_Careers Email me the ppt as an attachment (instructions: click the paperclip at the bottom of your email) by the due date/time.
