Missouri Compromise Page 305

Events Effects 1. U.S. won more than 500,000 square miles of land from the Mexican American War. President Polk wanted to extend the 36’30’ line (from Missouri Compromise of 1820) to decide what areas will be free states and slave states. Other leaders wanted to allow popular sovereignty – people living in those areas should be able to decide whether they will be slave states or free states. Northern states tried to pass the Wilmot Proviso which prohibited slavery in all new territories. However, this proposal failed to pass in the Southern controlled Senate. 2. Anti-slavery forces formed the Free Soil Pary, which supported the Wilmot Proviso.
