General wiring procedure for a new instrument A problem that we have faced over and over in building new devices or instruments is to wire up a components properly. We need to take more time and effort to do this properly adding flexibility and robustness to the design. Use robust wire or multi-wire cable. Use “mate-n-lok” or similar connectors between devices so that the device can be removed and worked on easily. Leave excess length and coil the wire on both ends. Tie wrap down to frame. Tie wrap the wire to a frame, controller, gauge or computer. Keep all the wires low on the frame if possible, but visible and run along the rear of the frame until reaching the device . Wires should not be “floating” within the instrument frame. Floating wires get in the way. If it looks like spaghetti you have done it wrong! Use the label printer to label both ends of each wire connection. In the example below, we require four labels at each end of the wires/cables. Labels should clearly state what the connector should be plugged into. Use tie wraps or conduit to hold and run wires along the frame. If you have a drawer that holds the controller or device make sure that you leave enough slack in the wire to open the drawer completely.
