Magazine and newspaper presentation. MOLLY CRAWFORD AND RACHEL LOWE.
Introduction: Connotation and Denotation. What are connotation and denotations? A connotation is something suggested by the idea, object or feeling. E.g the connotation of a rose is love A denotation is the description of the idea, object or feeling. E.g the denotation of a rose is a red flower.
Front cover: Denotation: The Empire’s front cover includes a picture of the biggest film of 2018 which is Avengers: Infinity War. The front cover includes some of the main characters from the film, for example Iron man, Thanos and many more. The front cover features articles on Infinity war and A Quiet Place. Connotation: The title is bold and in white so the title can stand out against the red/orange warm coloured background. The front cover has a very warm toned colour scheme, this connotes the infinity stones in the film as the main stone is yellow and orange. The colour scheme could also connote war as the film is about a huge war that goes on between the avengers also in the finally scene there was fire in the background when the fighting had finished.
The Front Cover of The Times: On the front of the newspaper is the Queen, she is shown standing In honour of the fallen soldiers to commemorate the 100 years since the end of world war one. Oh her left shoulder there is a cluster of fabric poppies pinned to her black coat with a very eccentric broach, the red and black featured in this image are the only two colours in the article. Red for the poppies and black for the fallen soldiers. Black connotes death and in this article it Is used to show the seriousness of the article topic. Red connotes love and how armistice day is about love and remembering the loved ones who lost their lives in the war. By the newspaper only using red in the image it makes stand out more and makes the reader recognize the poppies. Red connotes, blood, danger and love.
Article: The article I have chosen is a review on the popular TV show The Walking Dead. It is a recap and review of the last 8 seasons of the show by director and FX guru, Greg Nicotero. This article links to the target audience of the magazine as Empire is a magazine about reviews on new and upcoming films and other smaller articles on directors and TV shows. The magazine is aimed for people who enjoy TV and film and are big fans of the cinematic world everything from TV and film to games. The article has a little summery from all 8 seasons and includes a few images from key events from the show including Negan. The language used in the article is very basic and simple so it is easy to understand.
Article of my choice: For the article of choice I chose one from the world section in The Times newspaper, the headline on this article states that “Extremists try to hijack Polish parade” in this article the headline is in a black and bold font to the left-hand side of the image. The image shows a man in a green mask holding a flare in his left hand, the connotations of someone in a mask is bad but the mask colour connotes good and safety because of its green colour. This however, contrasts with the flare the man is holding in his hand which emits a red glare, the connotations of red are danger, blood and war so by the red flame being emitted it makes the man look dangerous.
Advert: The advert I have chosen is advertising the VHS range at HMV. Denotation The advert uses simple bullet points to tell the audience what is included in the DVD set. It also uses key words like the HMV logo and 2 for £25 deal. The advert has 2 images of the product one them is the different DVDs you can purchase and the other image is an inside look of the DVD. The colour scheme is pink, blue and black. Connotation The colour scheme is very 80s theme and retro colours which fits in with the films as most of them came out in the 80s or later. The boarder of the advert is the same boarder as the VHS tapes which has lines across a black background.
An Advertisement in the magazine: The language used in this advert makes it easier for the audience to read as it has abbreviated words to make the overall sentence snappier and more memorable. The abbreviation of “we have” to “we’ve” makes the sentence shorter and easier to read making the advert more memorable because it wasn’t very long. The colours used in this advert are gold, orange and white. The connotation of gold is loyalty, wealth and courage but is also a common colour amongst Christmas decorations making the audience feel Christmassy and getting them into the Christmas spirit. The adverts main purpose is to advertise the full advert premiering on ITV. With all of the text shown in the middle of the page it focuses the readers attention on the words in the centre of the page.
Genre: My magazine is a tabloid magazine as it talks about new and upcoming movies and is quite informal. Empire is an entertainment magazine and includes different articles across its 146 pages. The articles cover everything from latest films to recaps of TV shows or even some games, unlike other magazines empire just talks about entertainment, and includes mainly film based adverts.
Genre: The times is a Broadsheet newspaper Which includes 70 pages with many articles in different categories like news, comment, letters to the editor, leading articles, world, times 2, arts, the game, television and radio, mind games, business and sport. The times newspaper is very much orientated around the news, both world-wide and country wide making it a more sophisticated newspaper because a tabloid like the sun wouldn’t report on events across the world they would focus on the events within the country.
Style: The language used in Empire magazine is formal and informative, as it is providing information to the audience about new releases in the cinema. Most of the pages in the magazine have a white background so the text can stand out and the audience can read it clearly. However, the main article in Empires magazine is 25 page spread about Avengers infinity war, this article uses lots of bright colours to grab the reader's attention it also uses colour that fit in with the film for example some of the pages have the colours of the infinity stones on them. The layout is pretty consistent across the magazine as they use a similar layout for most of the articles.
Style: The style of The Times newspaper is very formal, throughout the whole newspaper the language does not falter from being very complex and well punctuated. There is a lack of bright or bold colours in this newspaper, so it gives a very serious feeling to the person who is reading it making them feel appropriate to the mood of the article. The layout of newspaper includes a lot of images to make the reader interested in the article but as the articles become shorter so does the number of images used. When the articles become longer there are more images used in the articles to make them stand out more but most of images don’t include masses of colour. The house style was consistent throughout the whole newspaper, with the same font size for all the articles included in the newspaper.
Target audience: The primary target audience for Empire magazine is film and TV enthusiasts, this is clearly evident in the magazine as it is filled with different articles based on new and upcoming releases and TV shows and includes special interviews with the cast and directors. It also features a few reviews about different film in the cinema. I would say the main age of the target audience is 15-40+ because most films are 12 and up so most of the target audience would be around that age group. I would say the gender of the target audience is male and female because film and TV can be enjoyed by everyone. However I would say that the target audience is largely male.
Target audience: The target audience has an outstanding number of people in the over sixties bracket of the British population, so most of the target audience aren’t too familiar with how to use the technology younger people would use to hear or read about the news The Times has created their content to fit with their target audience, by making the newspaper so long they know that the target audience aren’t going to be very busy when they would read their paper. Similarly, they know young people aren’t going to be reading the paper so they can use complex sentences. The times has a target audience mostly of men, this is because the times paper has news in it and stereotypically women don’t read the news and as this newspaper is very news orientated it wouldn’t appeal to a woman. The times newspaper appeals to its audience because it orientates itself around the interests of the target audience, the main audience are middle to higher class males.
