Lesson 1-2 Solving Equations by Adding or Subtracting Lesson 1-3 Solving Equations by Multiplying or Dividing Obj: The student will be able to 1) solve one-step equations in one variable by using addition or subtraction 2) solve one-step equations in one variable by using multiplication or division HWK: p 20-22 22, 28, 34, 38, 52-60 even, 61-63 all p 27-29 22, 26, 32, 36, 44, 46-54 even Vocab: 1) equation 2) solution of an equation 3) inverse operations

Properties of Equality Addition Property of Equality – You can add the same number to both sides of an equation and the statement will still be true. Subtraction Property of Equality – You can subtract the same number from both sides of an equation and the statement will still be true. Multiplication Property of Equality – You can multiply both sides of an equation by the same number and the statement will still be true. Division Property of Equality – You can divide both sides of an equation by the same nonzero number and the statement will still be true.

Solve each equation. Check your answer. Ex 1) – 5 = k + 5 Ex 2) n – 3.2 = 5.6 Ex 3) - 3 4 + z = 5 4

Ex 4) – 4 = 𝑘 −5 Ex 5) 13 = - 2w Ex 6) 5 2 = 4𝑦 3

Ex 7) A person’s maximum heart rate is the highest rate, in beats per minute, that the person’s heart should reach. One method to estimate maximum heart rate states that your age added to your maximum heart rate is 220. Using this method, write and solve an equation to find the maximum heart rate of a 15-year-old.

Ex 8) The distance in miles from the airport that a plane should begin descending, divided by 3, equals the plane’s height above the ground in thousands of feet. If a plane is 10,000 feet above the ground, write and solve an equation to find the distance at which the pilot should begin descending.
