Colons Review of Colon Rules Use a colon to introduce a list of items in a series. A colon may be used between independent clauses when the second sentence explains, illustrates, paraphrases, or expands on the first sentence. Colon Rule 3 A colon is used as an introduction to an explanation when an independent clause precedes the explanation. Example: The police told the criminal there was only one option open: give him up.
