Geography The 5 Themes

Location “Where is it?” – Every place has an Absolute Location and a Relative Location. Absolute Location – an exact location using longitude and latitude lines. Relative Location – tells where a place is, compared to other places.

Place “What is it like?” – Describes the features and characteristics of an area. Example: a hot, dry sandy covered area describes a desert

Human/Environmental Interaction “How does the surroundings affect the way people live” Example: many years ago, people living on or near the coast were often fishermen

Movement “How do people in one area relate to people in other areas?” People, ideas, goods, and information move from place to place.

Region “What common characteristics does a certain area share?” Examples of regions can include: cultural, physical features, language, and religion.

5 Themes Exercise Determine which theme is described in the following statements – Location (Absolute or Relative)/ Place / Region / Movement / Human – Environment Interaction.

#1 The Outer Banks are the eastern most region of North Carolina.

#2 By the Mid-1800’s, the majority of Latin American countries were following the United States’ model of government and creating democracies.

#3 Due to new construction of homes and businesses in Brazil, over 1,900 acres of the Amazon Rain Forest are being destroyed per day.

#4 The United States is diligently working on new plans to drill for oil in the Northern Alaska area.

#5 The CIA satellite located the terrorist at 25 deg. - 28 minutes N latitude and 77 deg. - 13 minutes E longitude.

#6 North Carolina is one of the few states in the Union that has both mountains and beaches for tourists.

#7 The most humid areas of the United States lies in the Southeastern Sunbelt.
