Unit 2: People and the Planet This topic is LIVING SPACES What do you need to know? How and why there are variations in quality of living spaces? How far can growing demands for quality of living spaces become more sustainable?

What are the ingredients of good living spaces? People vary in their perception of what makes a good living space (kq1)

Learning outcomes MUST: Describe the elements that make places attractive or unattractive to different groups of people SHOULD: To be able to explain why rural and urban areas appeal to some groups and not others COULD: To explain in detail the factors that make a good living space and how these may vary from person to person

Starter Activity Suggest the issues connected to these places. Using your copy annotate what people may like or dislike about them. Show images of different residential areas, one high quality and the other a deprived areas. Students to brainstorm the issues connected to these places. Then link into differences between rural and urban areas and what people may like or dislike about them. Annotate the ideas onto suitable images of place.

Write down the top 3 things that you think makes somewhere a good place to live Now ‘pair share’ these ideas until you have at least 10 things in your list Look at the results of a survey done by ‘Mori’. Describe and suggest reasons for any patterns you can identify. Look at overall results and pick out some comparisons of rural and urban After completing the task ask them what other demographic characteristics may affect how people prioritize the factors (ie, age, sex)

Attachment to a place Place attachment can take 2 forms: Functional – gives you the things you need (somewhere to live, food, water, work) Emotional – involves feelings, moods and emotions that people attach to a place Also considered are SOCIAL – ECONOMIC – ENVIRONMENTAL factors Discuss these key words and students write the definition of all 5 key words in their books

Comparing the best and worse Read the information from the Channel 4 website about Middlesbrough and Edinburgh Shade positives and negatives in different colours but also subcategorise into social/environmental/economic (you will need 6 colours!)

Where would you like to live? Identify a location in the UK where you would most like to live in ten year’s time least like to live in ten year’s time. Suggest reasons for your choices (describe & explain)
