Exchange papers with someone. Check for “first impressions”: Is it in MLA style (header, running header, spacing)? Does it have a title? (Does it grab your attention?) Is the opening line grammatically & mechanically correct?

Does it respond clearly to the prompt? Does it mention “O. Henry” and “The Gift of the Magi”? Does it mention “emotional weight” and “climax”? Does it list some specific strategies and/or techniques? In a paper no longer than two pages (using 12-point Times New Roman font and following MLA format), explain the strategies or techniques O. Henry uses in “The Gift of the Magi” to give emotional weight to the story’s climax.

If the draft has only a paragraph or two, write down where you think the paper is going – that is, tell the writer what you would expect to read next, if the paper were finished. If the draft is longer than a page, go ahead and comment on the appropriateness of the content.
