Determination How far is the athlete willing to go Determination How far is the athlete willing to go? Will they give up after the first mistake, or will they keep pushing until they overcome an obstacle? Determination is something that separates the good from the great it is what a dancer is ready to do in order to achieve a goal. Dancing is particularly frustrating for athletes because every little body movement matters. It takes time, effort and dedication to master technique, leaps, jumps, turns, tumbling and stunting. You have to not only be physically prepared; your mind must be equally strong. And it all boils down to how determined an athle te will be to accomplish his or her goals. Are you coachable? Determined

Willingness to listen and apply corrections This is something we as coaches do not take lightly. If an athlete is unable to listen to a coach, there will be tension and frustration on both ends. Being open and willing to hear what your coach has to say without getting defensive or angry is a sign of maturity and will take you far in life. Learning how to separate correction from “being mean” is something not all athletes understand. Some never do. Understand that your coach is not here to make you feel bad about yourself and that they want what is best for you. Apply the corrections and listen to the coach because, chances are, they are right! Know that you will become a better athlete through listening to your coaches. Are you coachable? Willingness to listen and apply corrections

Accepting of defeat You will fail. Many times Accepting of defeat You will fail. Many times. Dance is challenging; we don’t always hit every move perfectly right away. When we learn a new turn combo or stunt sequence - it will probably not go as planned. And understanding that “making mistakes” is a part of the learning process is applicable to your life far after dance team is over. I think the saying, “If you fall down 7 times, get up 8” is such an important one to remember. Failing, making mistakes, and feeling defeated is inevitable. But how you react is something you can control - and rising to the occasion only makes you stronger. Are you coachable? Accepting defeat

Genuine passion Your commitment to dance and performance comes from your passion. It is obvious if a dancer is not passionate about the sport - you can see it on his or her face. You need to be completely engaged as a dancer, but this will come naturally if you truly love dancing. Passion arises from within and is not something you can force upon someone. If you love dancing it will show in your spirit! You also must be passionate about being a good team mate. This is not an individual sport it is a team and every spot matters. Are you coachable? Genuine passion

Mindset Use phrases like this: I am responsible to do what it takes to be in the routine. I am responsible for working my hardest to prove myself I am responsible for being on time, being disciplined, being positive. I am responsible for being a good teammate. The phrase “I am responsible” is Empowering. It paces the ball in your court. Responsibility puts you in charge and gives you the choice to take action Avoid phrases like: I deserve to be in the routine I deserve to be in front I deserve to get special treatment I deserve to be more appreciated WHY DO YOU DESERVE IT? The word deserve is disempowering. It takes the power out of your control because it means what I want has to be given to me. Mindset

Auditions Wednesday, February 27 30 minute time slots Varsity 3:15-6:15 EYDT 6:30-9:00 Please indicate on your application any commitments you have on Wednesday. We will do our best to schedule accordingly.

Audition details Participant should attend practice workshops as listed to learn the routine, and the routine will be posted on YouTube for review.   Wear jazz shoes, tank top, shorts or leggings, hair pulled back, good attitude and smile. Bring along a water bottle.                           Throughout the workshops, the coaches will be assessing their ability. Judges will score them at the audition, and the coach has the final decision on who makes the team.                          Participants are asked to read and sign the dance team tryout contract. The contract outlines what is required of participants if they make the team. It is important for both the participant and the parent to understand what being on the team will involve and that the culture of the team is what makes Everest Dance successful. On tryout day the participant will demonstrate his/her performance skills in a closed tryout. He/she will be given a number and will dance with one or two other participants. Each will be scored individually.                         A panel of judges will judge the dancer.                             The cut or number for the team is based on the skill level of the members. The coach has final say on who she feels is best suited to represent Everest School District. The team typically ranges from 18-26 dancers. All former dance team members must tryout to be a part of the team.
