Presentation transcript:

Leah Pedro How is the manipulation of the English Language today similar to that of Newspeak in 1984?

Do you think you have a larger vocabulary than educated students two-hundred years ago?

Does anyone know the meaning of these words? Write down what you think! Anacreontic Adduce Morbific Tenebrous

Please pass your cards to the front

Definitions Jovial, festive and amorous; celebrating love and drinking To cite as an example, reason, or proof in a formal discussion or analysis Causing or producing disease; pathogenic Dark and gloomy

Examples Newspeak Words Bellyfeel- Blind, enthusiastic acceptance of an idea Duckspeak- To speak without thinking, like a duck quacking Unperson- Someone who has been killed, and vaporized from existence Ingsoc-English Socialism All of these words eliminate the need for adjectives They are easy to understand and comprehend Vast vocabulary is not needed because people can use universal, and simple terminology

The Internet Phrases have been shortened and abbreviated to be more efficient Be right back-BRB Laugh out loud-LOL Got to go-GTG In order to save time, possible vocabulary words are eliminated because you can’t usually type Henceforth, I shall return (BRB) as quickly

Auto-Correct If a computer system doesn’t recognize a word, it may correct the word or phrase automatically The auto-correct is not always right Alters the way you speak-alters your language When your words are changed, the meaning may be manipulated Auto-Correct easily changes the meaning and purpose of the written thought

Connection to 1984 Use of language is imperative- it allows people to properly express themselves With common phrases that diminish the need for vocabulary and don’t invoke the thought process, people don’t express themselves as often Loss of language= Loss of free speech Newspeak in 1984 diminished language and squelched individuality and thought advanced beyond other’s capability-you cannot think for yourself-Newspeak thinks for you

To sum it all up, if someone or something else is thinking and formulating your words for you, those words aren’t yours and can be anything the controller wants

Another example…

The “synonyms” tab in Word right click on a word and go to synonyms, gives list About seven choices, out of a language with almost a million words to select from

Compare & Contrast Similarities Social norms force many humans to comply with the use of similar words The English language is diminishing because people refuse to use complex and outstanding vocabulary There is less expression of thought in voice and writing, less words to describe how you feel Essentially, less free thought

Compare & Contrast Differences The Newspeak words were forced upon the people, we choose to regress as a language The new phrases (internet lingo/abbreviations) are not getting rid of the word completely, just altering the word Newspeak’s Dictionary contains words that are driven towards accepting and following authority Technology wasn’t the main motivation for Newspeak, but in present day the fast pace of life is what pushed people to adapt
