Zika FHP Summary Spread by daytime mosquitoes Use DEET and permethrin treated uniform, long sleeves, stay in AC areas with door and window screens; also follow malaria guidelines (nighttime bed nets, Rx prophylaxis, etc.) Eliminate mosquito habitat: small pools of water (from bottle caps to tires, pots, containers, flower pots, outdoor toys); NOT present in large bodies of water or flowing water Eliminate mosquito larvae: treat environment with larvicides; spraying to kill adult mosquitoes largely ineffective Few reports of spread by sexual contact: use condoms or abstain from sex May result in birth defects: avoid deployment of pregnant or potentially pregnant women to affected areas (Africa, SE Asia, Pacific Islands, South and Central Americas); otherwise mostly not symptomatic or mild flu-like symptoms; unproven potential link to a life-threatening neurological syndrome No treatment or vaccine; avoid NSAIDs (asprin, ibuprofen, motrin, advil, etc.); use Tylenol, hydrate For more info go to http://phc.amedd.army.mil MAJ Derek Mydlarz, dariusz.g.mydlarz.mil@mail.mil, 703-607-1056 2/25/2019
