Question 2.2 Choose a method you used to RECORD performance development Give 2 reasons why this method was chosen. (4 Marks) Choose a method you used to MONITOR performance development Give 2 reasons why this method was chosen. (4 Marks)

Recording/Monitoring Methods Recording Method Training Diary Monitoring Methods (retest and compare) Fitness Tests Video Analysis Observation Schedules Questionnaires

Why Training Diaries are appropriate? I use a diary because it provides personal feelings and thoughts. This is an example of internal feedback therefore it is valid as I know it is true. Not relying on others therefore responsibility is on you to complete. Very little risk of it not being completed if YOU do it. It is a permanent reflection that can be used to be reflected on in the future. Also used to compare to previous diary entries to track feelings regarding sessions. It is a consistent approach as it is written by you. This increases the reliability of the information as no one else’s opinions are inputted. Diaries can be written up immediately after the session. Therefore you will not forget anything that has happened during the session and your opinions on the session will be fresh in your head. Comments and feelings recorded regarding previous sessions can be reflected on to adjust future training sessions. It allows you to record how successful drills were and modify to suit needs where appropriate.

Why are Fitness Tests/ Video Analysis/ Observation Schedules/ Questionairres effective monitoring tools? Fitness tests; Can be compared to national averages Can be compared to the start and end of TP to check for improvement. It shows how effective TP has been, if at all. Tests show new strengths and weaknesses - and therefore areas to work on for future development. Video analysis; Visual feedback, therefore you can see where your performance is needing fine-tuned. Able to compare performance to your previous or to a model performer. Can use slow motion and zoom tools to finely pick and fine tune individual components of skills that need improved. Its a permanent record and you are able to review it at any time to revise points to be improved.

Why are Fitness Tests/ Video Analysis/ Observation Schedules effective monitoring tools? Provides written evidence showing strengths and weaknesses. You are able to make comparisons before and after TP. It provides immediate feedback and can focus in on one particular skills or part of a skill eg PREP/ACT/REC of an OHC Questionnaire Provides specific feedback regarding your weakness Immediate feedback Personal feedback with no other opinions other than yours…helps validity of information Consistent information with same questionnaire being completed…helps reliability Honest answers will help validity of conclusions Can be compared to previous to check for improvements

Sample Answer One reason why I chose an observation schedule to monitor my performance is that the data can easily be compared to my initial results. By redoing an observation schedule under the same conditions I will clearly be able to see the improvements I have made in my game when comparing the two observations next to each other. This will highlight the progress I have made, if any, during my training programme which will allow me to then overload my training programme if I am progressing or adapt my training programme if I have made no improvements.

Expand Bullet Points It is a permanent reflection that can be used to be reflected on in the future. Also used to compare to previous diary entries to track feelings regarding sessions It is a permanent reflection that can be used to be reflected on in the future. This would allow me to look back and track my progress as I work through my training programme. If I notice that my comments are all negative and show no improvement I would need to adapt or change my training programme depending on the information given. If the comments suggest that I am finding the training too easy I would need to overload my training to ensure that I continually improving and not reaching a plateau in my development.

Expand Bullet Points Can be compared to the start and end of TP to check for improvement. Using the bleep test to monitor performance can be compared to the start and end of TP to check for improvement. This would highlight what level of progress I have made throughout my training programme. I can also compare these results to the national averages to highlight where my fitness levels now lie in terms of am I poor, average or above average. If my score for the leger test had shown improvement from below average to excellent I know my training programme has worked but if it has remained the same or has only moved up to average I know I still have more work to do.
