Teachers don’t teach a subject, like English. Teachers teach students. Students learn. Teachers help students learn.

The focus should be on the students Not English

Therefore, as teachers Our focus should be on the students, not on English. We should focus on our methods – our approach – our techniques – not the subject. How do students learn? How can we make learning easier? How can we make learning fun? How can we make learning interesting?

Question # 2 What is our goal?

We say we want to be “better” at English We say we want to be “better” at English. We want our students to be better at English. What does that mean?

We want to be fluent in English? or …. When we say “better” don’t we mean Fluent? We want to be fluent in English? or …. …more fluent in English?

We want our students to learn English, to be better using English. In short, to be fluent in English.

Question # 4 What is the biggest mistake most foreign language teachers make when trying to help students learn English?

They speak Korean to their students.

When teachers use Korean in English class it makes the students lazy.

When Korean is used in the English classroom, it helps in the short run Skill Time

But is harmful in the long run Skill Time

What the teachers should try to do is help the student figure out the answer using body language songs role play communicative approach activities - competition pictures – images

When you show a picture and its English word Students learn to think in English when they see that object in real life.

The # 1 fear of most people is

Speaking in front of a group.

But they are more of afraid of speaking in front of their friends then they are of death!

They are afraid the other students are going to laugh at them.

We make it ok to make a mistake.

Another mistake teachers make is thinking rote is learning. Question # 6 What are the three most important principles of learning?

To get their students to think in English

Methods I use Communicative approach – what the student needs to learn. Total Physical Response – what the student does. Competitive games – make everything a game.
