Investigating Cooling The amount of help given for this depends on the ability of your group:- Depending on time and group ability either allow students to plan their own investigation (to be carried out next lesson) or get students to plot a simple cooling curve What are the factors which effect how fast my cup of coffee cools? Identify and select the variables that you wish to measure and control Produce your own experimental procedure, including the selection of appropriate time intervals. Cooling Demonstration Several demonstrations can be carried out here using data loggers. Demonstrations should be chosen to highlight some factors which students did not investigate or did not get good accurate results. Plot a cooling curve for different amounts of water. Ask students how mass of water effects cooling rate. Plot a cooling curve for polystyrene cup and a ceramic cup or two polystyrene cup one with lid and one without lid.
