Economic Review Agriculture is the mainstay of Pakistan's economy, employing almost 50% of the population. Wheat, rice, cotton, sugarcane, and tobacco are the chief crops, and cattle and sheep are raised. Most of Pakistan's agricultural output comes from the Indus basin. The country's natural resources provide materials for such industries as textile production (the biggest earner of foreign exchange), oil refining, metal processing, and cement and fertilizer production. Remittances from Pakistan is working abroad constitute the second largest source of foreign exchange. Since the mid-1950s electric power output has greatly increased, mainly because of the development of hydroelectric power potential and the use of thermal power plants. Pakistan's chief imports are petroleum, machinery, transport equipment, chemicals, and edible fats and oils. The chief trading partners are the European Union nations, the United States, Japan, and China.

Port’s Location

Karachi Port Trust http://www.kpt.gov.pk Karachi Port is the premier port of Pakistan and is being managed through Karachi Port Trust (KPT). Karachi port handles about 75% of the entire national cargo. It is a deep natural port with 11 km long approach channel to provide safe navigation up to 75,000 DWT tankers, modern container vessels, bulk carriers and general cargo ships. The Port has 30 dry cargo. Berths including two Container Terminals and 3 liquid cargo-handling berths. KPT intends to cater for 12-meter draught ships, which are the most widely used container vessels. The geographic position of Karachi Port places it in proximity to the main shipping routes. All geared vessels working with their gears are calling on the conventional berths at KPT. Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT) http://www.pict.com.pk Total Area of berths 6-9 is 220,000 square meters. Berths newly constructed by KPT with a planned depth of 13.5m and quay wall of 600 meters. Pakistan International Container Terminal was formed as the Terminal Operating Company and dedicated container terminal operations have commenced on August 9th, 2002. Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT) http://www.kict.com.pk KICT is located at the western part of Karachi Port (west wharf), a natural deep-water harbor on the Pakistan coast of Arabian Sea. KICT has been in operation since 1998. KICT comprises three berths and modern container handling equipments. Qasim International Container Terminal (QICT) http://www.qict.com.pk QICT is located 70 KM from Karachi Port. The location of the Terminal outside city boundaries negates the requirement for containers to be transported through the city for upcountry destinations as well as ensures that industries located within the Port area have the added advantage of savings on transportation and other costs in exporting/importing their raw materials.
