BOOK OF JEREMIAH Background Jeremiah best remembered as the prophet who wept over Judah’s captivity and the destruction of Jerusalem. He came from a priestly family but was unsuccessful. He preached to Judah from 626 B.C. to 586 B.C. On the National scene the N.K. had been destroyed by Assyria in 722 B.C. and Judah had been spared when an Angel of the Lord smote 185,000 Assyrians in one night. On the International scene Assyria to the north was declining in power, Babylon to the east was rising in power and Egypt to the SW was still a force to be reckoned with.

BOOK OF JEREMIAH Survey Recurring themes: Jerusalem will be destroyed by Babylon. If Judah will repent they will be spared. Since Judah won’t repent, if they surrender Jerusalem will be spared but they will still go into captivity. Judah will go away into captivity for 70 years, but they will return to rebuild Jerusalem. God will punish Babylon for her ruthlessness.
