Helpful Hints for the Regents Exam

Multiple Choice Make sure you answer all of the questions (50). Look over the test to see if one part can help you to answer another part. Eliminate two answers immediately. If you are still unsure make an educated guess. In general, go with your first answer choice. Questions with readings: read the questions first. Underline important words and phrases as you read the passage. If you get stuck on a difficult question, skip it and go on to the next.

Thematic Essay Make sure you know TWO of each essay topic that we studied (leaders, religion, geography and world problems). Read the directions and the task thoroughly. Write legibly You MUST include outside information. Relate (connect) the question to anything we studied, read or watched.

Scaffolding (Part A of DBQ) Write in full sentences. Do not just restate what the document says. Be sure to analyze and evaluate the documents. These points are very important. They are added directly to your score point for point.

DBQ Make sure you read the question thoroughly (watch for and/or etc). Answer all parts (each bullet). Use the correct number of documents. If you want a 5 use them all! This should be written like a thematic essay. Outline on scrap paper and see where the documents can be inserted. You must have an introduction and a conclusion that goes beyond simply restating the task. At least 3-4 main body paragraphs. If you know more- WRITE MORE. Make sure you cite the documents. Can be done by using parenthesis. You MUST include outside information- this is information not mentioned in the documents.
