Propaganda Techniques
Name Calling Links a person, or idea, to a negative symbol or image Makes someone look bad.
Glittering Generalities Words of praise for product or person; nice words like goodness or patriotism
Transfer Linking something the audience likes or respects with an item or idea to generate positive feelings for it. Symbols are often used to stir up emotions and win approval.
Testimonial A public figure or a celebrity promotes or endorses a product , a policy, or a political candidate.
Plain Folks Attempt to convince the audience that a prominent person and his/her ideas are “of the people” The use of everyday people to sell a product or idea. "Plain folks" were intended to relate to the common person and so they could see them as similar to themselves. Makes us identify with the speaker.
Bandwagon Makes the appeal that “everyone else is doing it, so you should too.” Similar to peer pressure
Emotional Appeal Plays on deep-seated fears; warns the audience that disaster will result if they do not follow a particular course of action.
