MyD88 Signaling in the Intestine: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde? Christian Jobin Gastroenterology Volume 139, Issue 2, Pages 383-386 (August 2010) DOI: 10.1053/j.gastro.2010.06.027 Copyright © 2010 AGA Institute Terms and Conditions
Figure 1 Dual function of MyD88 signaling in the intestine. After activation by various luminal commensal and pathogenic bacteria, the intracellular protein MyD88 transmits its signaling cascade to various effector systems. Depending on the cellular origin of MyD88 activation, the host will exhibit strikingly different outcomes. (1) MyD88 signaling in IEC promotes expression of selective AMP, which associate with enhanced host fitness/survival. (2) After infection with the pathogenic strain H hepaticus, innate cell-derived MyD88 signaling promote inflammatory gene expression leading to colitis and extra-intestinal inflammation.
