COMMA RULE #1: Compound Sentences Use commas in compound sentences to separate independent clauses* when they are joined by a conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so, because). Example: Napoleon wanted to eat the tater tots but food wasn’t allowed in class. , *Contain subject and predicate; can stand alone as its own sentence.
