Spanish 2 with Dr. Valerio Second Semester Spanish ¡Bienvenidos!

Expectations… Bring your book to every class Take notes Use the textbook website and CD-ROM Use other on-line resources (many listed on my website) www.lhup.edu/evalerio Complete workbook exercises Practice outside of class

Label your work! YOUR NAME You would be surprised at the number of assignments received every semester with no name. Your credit is in jeopardy if your work must be taken back to three different sections to see if you can identify your work by handwriting alone. Your name should be LEGIBLE (not a signature) and should include your LAST NAME

Label your work! YOUR SECTION (SPAN 102-01/02/05) Know your section. Write it on every exam, every assignment. Which section are you in? SPAN 102-01 (8 a.m. class) SPAN 102-02 (9 a.m. class) SPAN 102-05 (3 p.m. class) These are examples. Your section will differ depending on the particular semester.

Label your work! THE NAME OF YOUR ASSIGNMENT These are sample assignment labels. Note that Composition Assignments have different phases… Label your work! THE NAME OF YOUR ASSIGNMENT Composition #1 (Part One/Two*) Draft Composition #1 (Part One/Two*) Revision Involvement with Spanish #1 – Word List Involvement with Spanish #2 – Reading Report Involvement with Spanish #3 – Web Sites *Some compositions have two parts. Indicate which part you are submitting…

Label your work! SAMPLE LABEL Eduardo Valerio SPAN 102-01 Composition #1 (Part 1 or 2 if applicable) Draft Your Name Your Section The Assignment The phase of the assignment (if applicable)

Label your work! Include your section SPAN 102-01, 02, or 05 (section numbers differ depending on the semester) on your pre-printed Homework pages. If you type your homework, you should label it with your NAME, HOMEWORK, the LESSON you are completing, your SECTION

Practice Hints Concentrate effort toward adopting the sounds of Spanish. Practice sounds you know you have trouble with using a variety of different words. (Traditional trouble sounds… r, d, v, q, t ) No vowel reduction (schwa) Keep all letter sounds short compared to English. No expulsion of air as in English p, t, k, etc. Adopt the vowels as they are in Spanish

Other hints… Listen to Spanish being spoken while looking at a written text of the same words. Stop the video/CD/audiotape from time to time and try to say the same thing the speaker just said.

Other hints… Seek out native speakers willing to talk with you. Watch Spanish television programs and listen to Spanish music when possible. Rent Spanish videos from your local library, view Spanish clips on the Internet.

Other hints… Develop meaningful vocabulary that is related—It is advisable to learn vocabulary the way you did in language classes… Think of words you would need to discuss a particular subject. Look up a set of words that would assist you in such a discussion or written topic. Expand your list to include “however,” “therefore,” and other connecting words.

Other hints… Spend time reviewing known words and adding new words to your vocabulary.

Other hints… Practice saying the alphabet using the sounds of Spanish.

Other hints… Practice numbers in Spanish every time you use them in English… Telling time Discussing money, prices Telephone numbers Addresses Numbers of items (3 books, 4 tickets) Dates and calendar year Temperature

Other hints… Whisper Spanish as often as you can (when traveling alone in the car for example) to refine your pronunciation and review phrasing of certain word combinations.

Other hints… Practice reading aloud. Use the phonetic rules you know and develop an authentic “flow of language” as you read. You don’t have to understand everything in order to do this...
