Stress Introduction 9/8/14

Stress Introduction Stress- a reaction by your body and mind to threatening or challenging events in your life. You experience stress when situations, events, or people make demands on your body and mind. These demands are often times part of your everyday life. Stressors- the causes of stress. Examples Upcoming Game Other examples

What is Homeostasis? Biological balance within living things.

Why is it important to maintain a stable internal environment? To maintain a balanced internal environment. When the body falls out of homeostasis (balance) organ systems become affected and work less efficiently. Too much time outside of homeostasis can cause illness.

Major Life Changes Events that change a person’s family or school life. These changes are stressful because they threaten the person’s sense of security or self-esteem. What are some examples of major life changes? Does stress always have to be negative? Examples

Everyday Problems Hassles- everyday problems that are a part of life. Examples- losing something or having too many things to do at once. Other examples Even though these problems seem minor they contribute greatly to your overall stress. This is because you come across these problems everyday.

Did You Know? The United States offers the fewest out of 19 countries- 10.8 paid vacation days to employees. The country with the most paid days? Spain- 32 days What are some reasons for this difference?

Physical Surroundings Conditions in your immediate surroundings affect your level of stress each day. Example- Commuting to work everyday. Example- Noise, highly populated areas, polluted areas, weather conditions.

Other Stressors Worrying about the future is a major stressor for teenagers. You will soon face crucial decisions regarding your future. Decision-making can be very stressful. Conflict- disagreements with family, friends, and others is another source of stress. Special events- dates, big sporting events, job interviews, etc.

Positive and Negative Stress Stress can be positive When it promotes growth and accomplishment Eustress- positive stress Distress- Negative stress Research has shown that stress at moderate levels can actually improve your ability to concentrate and perform at your best. Beyond that however, and it begins to have a negative impact. Example- You have an upcoming driving test.

Role Play How many times have you experienced stress as a result of not knowing how to approach people in new situations. Why is it so difficult at times to express to others what we feel and want?

Role Play Cont. You are not alone. Saying no, asking questions taking control of situations – it takes time and practice to develop these skills. The more people and situations you deal with, the easier it will get. Being assertive is also difficult when we feel others are judging us, or will be hurt if we say something. What is important to remember is that being assertive is not hurtful to others – it is just being honest about how we feel.

Role Play cont… Divide into groups, receive scenario card. You will be practicing your assertiveness skills. Prepare a role play demonstrating assertive responses for their situations. Each group will perform its scenario. As a class we will discuss how effective they were handling each situation.

Group Exit Slip List as many stressors as you can on the board.
