Transitions in speech and writing In English, you should never start a sentence with “And”, “But”, or “So”. These are conjunctions used to connect two clauses within a sentence. Ex. I like cheese, and I love pizza. I like cheese. And I also love pizza. I like cheese, but I hate yogurt. I like cheese. But I hate yogurt.

These transitions can all be used instead of “So” to begin a sentence to show a RESULT (cause & effect relationship): That’s why As a result, Therefore, Consequently, The Avengers was popular. So it made a lot of money. The Avengers was popular, so it made a lot of money. The Avengers was popular. As a result, it made a lot of money.

Is it OK to begin a sentence with “Because”? Yes. However, because is always used in a sentence with two clauses, one showing cause, the other showing effect. For example: I love Dan. (effect) He is funny. (cause) Because Dan is funny, I love him. I love Dan because he is funny. I love Dan. Because he is funny. (fragment)
