Our Agile Journey Mark Heffernan Manager ICT Gippsland Water ICT exists to help Gippsland Water do business better and safer

Risk & issues uncovered Agile in 60 seconds… Agile is a set of principles Scrum is an Agile methodology Project delivery not project management Value Risk & issues uncovered Design Build Test Traditional Agile Value ICT exists to help Gippsland Water do business better and safer

Why Agile? We wanted to do things differently Several recent “significantly challenged” projects High profile, high risk but transformational project (Billing, CRM, Property management, Self service, Digital channels) Customer experience focus Capitalise on engagement and momentum already generated ICT exists to help Gippsland Water do business better and safer

How did we go about it… Training and certification AxisAgile & Certified Scrum Master Introduction to team High visibility and lots of Post-It Notes A lot of uncertainty Journey mapping ICT exists to help Gippsland Water do business better and safer

How it looks for us 2 week sprint cycle Planning (2hrs) Sprint delivery (incl Daily standups) Review (2hrs) Retro (1.5 hrs)

What’s worked for us… Journey mapping -> User stories Self organising team Development & upskilling Swarming A visible system & show what’s possible Uptake in other areas of the business Example… As a billing officer I want to see 20% variances against the estimated usage of the meter so that I can ensure customers are not billed incorrectly ICT exists to help Gippsland Water do business better and safer

Our challenges and learnings “Agile just means you don’t do doco and have a project plan” It’s just a buzzword (Bingo!) Initial uncertainty within the team. It’s not an IT project Fitting Agile into an asset and infrastructure based organisation (hint: Google “engineers and agile”) Overall reporting “Where’s the Gantt chart?” ICT exists to help Gippsland Water do business better and safer

Mark’s Takeaways It works. It’s not just a buzz word. Stick to the principles and live it Real value is in: A visible, stood up system Self selecting, multi skilled team Strong Product Owner (customer facing) You don’t need highly paid consultants! ICT exists to help Gippsland Water do business better and safer
