Individual research project MODULE SIX Individual research project Prepared by Dr Diane Aston, IOM3

Individual research project This final module brings everything together and you must carry out an individual research project on a material of your choice. Your work must consider all aspects of the material – its structure, properties, how it is processed, where it is used and how it has changed or may change the technology we rely on. Prepared by Dr Diane Aston, IOM3

Prepared by Dr Diane Aston, IOM3 Choose a topic First you need to identify the topic for your research project. Ideally this should be a material that is used in an application that is of interest to you. For example polypropylene, high strength low alloy steels, aerogel, Nitinol, graphene, etc.. Prepared by Dr Diane Aston, IOM3

Prepared by Dr Diane Aston, IOM3 Research You need to research your chosen topic and consider aspects such as: The history of your material Its occurence, extraction, structure, useful properties, how it is processed, where it is used and whether it can be recycled How your material has helped to improve our technology The future of your material Make sure you keep notes of your research and sources of information in your portfolio. Prepared by Dr Diane Aston, IOM3

Prepared by Dr Diane Aston, IOM3 Presentation Use your research to prepare a 10 minute Power Point presentation on your chosen material. In the final session you will be invited to give your presentation to your group. You will be given a slot of 15 minutes, allowing 5 minutes for questions. You will be marked on the quality of your slides and your presentation skills. This is nothing to be nervous about, this is your chance to show off how much you have learnt! Even the most confident presenters started out like this! Prepared by Dr Diane Aston, IOM3
