The Need for Addressing The Internet The Need for Addressing
What is the Internet? Internet: A collection of systems working together to deliver data to the user. This includes email, video streaming, social media, websites, cloud storage like DropBox, etc. Browser: Software application designed to retrieve and display information from the world wide web, which is one part of the Internet, for the user.
How does it work? So far, we have created protocols for encoding information into binary. Many computers are connected together, passing bits through many other computers (Think passing a written note to a friend in class) If a computer sends some bits out, how does a computer know whose bits they are? (How would this happen to our note in class?) How would the receiving computer respond and send bits back?
Broadcast Battleship So far we have tried a point to point (connected to one other person) communication. Obviously, the internet is larger than just two people at a time sharing a communication We are going to play a modified version of battleship. You will play games against multiple people, simultaneously You may play in groups of 3 (We may have one group of 4 – NO PAIRS!) Simplified 3 X 3 grid Just paper and pencil
Battleship Setup You will play against 2 (or 3) other people You will need to first mark where your ship is (one ship) It takes up two spaces Only spaces are vertically or horizontally Play battleship!
