Tips and Tricks to Conquer your Nervousness

Before Competition Be Prepared and Practice Write our your speech; don’t wing it. Record yourself and listen to it in playback This will give you clued into your bad habits and your rhythm, tone and pacing. Practice in Front of Someone You Trust This person must be able to be completely honest with you. Good examples are your significant other, your friends, your parents or your pet.

Pick a Topic you Generally Care About The topic should have an impact on you, be something you want to share with others, and be something you are able to speak from the heart from. Watch Yourself in the Mirror Pay attention to your facial expressions, gestures, body movements and how welcoming you are.

Focus on Patterns Get into a rhythm or flow Focus on Patterns Get into a rhythm or flow. Keep sentences short and to the point. Work in Pauses Don’t be afraid to slow down and take pauses. This will help with emphasis.

At Competition Arrive Early to Adjust to your Surroundings Allows you to settle int and get comfortable. Spend time in the area where you will be giving the speech. Don’t Fight Your Fear Accept that you are afraid and move on. This includes fears or rejection from the audience.

Right Before You Go In Drink Water This will help combat dry mouth from your nervousness. Turn Your Nervousness into Enthusiasm Listen to your favourite songs before going to help pump yourself up. Do Some Light Exercises This will get your blood circulating and send oxygen to your brain. Try walking or doing some stretches before going in.

During Your Speech Smile This release endorphins. Shows confidence and enthusiasm to the audience. Use a Power Stance When your body is confident, your mind will follow. Focus on the Material and Not the Audience Don’t think about the audience’s reactions. Observe but don’t obsess.

In the End Have Pride in Your Work and Recognize Your Own Success YOU are your biggest critic. Even if you bomb, by getting up there and doing it you’ve accomplished something amazing.
