Implementing Mobile Ticketing Humboldt Transit Authority System Information 55 Employees HTA Operates Fixed, Commuter, and Intercity routes 1,300,000 miles driven/year 775,000 rides/year We’re have a small staff and not a lot of time to devout to mobile ticketing

Implementing Mobile Ticketing Why Token Transit? Affordable start up Pilot program No up-front capital costs Passenger convenience Over 75% of Americans own a smart phone Able to utilize debit/credit cards to purchase tickets in real time

Implementing Mobile Ticketing Why Mobile Ticketing? Easier boarding process for new riders Having the correct fare takes the fear out of trying public transit Reduce cash transactions on the bus for quicker boarding times. We operate different systems within Humboldt county with several types of passes and discounts. It can be intimidating for someone wanting to “try out” public transportation. We have signs posted everywhere to have your fare ready and exact change

Implementing Mobile Ticketing . Cash fares down from 8% to 5% since implementing TT. Cash fares reduced from 8% to 5% since using token transit

Implementing Mobile Ticketing Why Mobile Ticketing? Bus stops in remote areas No ticket vending machines or ticket outlets to purchase bus tickets HTA sells tickets at our main office in Eureka and 10 miles north in Arcata. (Offer online/mail orders)

Implementing Mobile Ticketing Implementation Process Set up third party payment processor Provided TT information on HTA’s systems and fares Provided employee training Handouts & 15 minute training on the app. Distributed marketing materials for passengers & posted on social media (Materials provided by TT)

Implementing Mobile Ticketing How it Works Passengers can download the Token Transit mobile app for both iOS and Android.

Implementing Mobile Ticketing How it works Token Transit sends emails of upcoming images & keywords that we post for the drivers TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY

Implementing Mobile Ticketing How it works Passengers show their phone with the app (open) to the drivers who verifies the image and keyword.

Implementing Mobile Ticketing How it works HTA is currently testing the use of beacons. Passengers can place their smart phones over the target and will beep when the ticket is verified

Implementing Mobile Ticketing Token Transit Uses Ability for users to send passes to others from phone or PC This has been a helpful tool for our dispatcher Promotions An email to TT admin is all it takes to implement transit fare promotions. We started by offering 50% off for initial TT purchases. New system start up Last week we started a taxi voucher (pilot program) service for a small rural community. Instead of printing up costly tickets for our GFI farebox we were able to offer passes via TT. Next steps Using TT for Social Agencies, Government Agencies, and the local Junior College.

Implementing Mobile Ticketing Troubleshooting Like most rural agencies, we have a small staff and not a lot of time or expertise to deal with issues related to the phone app. Most of our issues are with passengers purchasing the wrong pass or getting the app to work correctly. We refer them to the help number that is on the app and TT website and 99% of problems are solved To date, we have not received any reports from drivers regarding fraudulent use. The beacons will improve accuracy to passenger counts. We receive weekly ridership reports from TT that is matched up with our farebox reports.
