Comparison of EHIS source questions with national survey questions Antti Tuomi-Nikula National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) Helsinki, Finland

Basics Work started in 2010: pilot comparison in EUHSID project; contract between Statistics Austria and THL, Finland Work done at THL Focus: EHIS wave 1 questions in 20 countries

Main goals To find out: Which EHIS questions are included in national surveys? Are the questions identical with the original? If they are not, to which degree do they differ? No comparison of survey methods

EHIS modules included & progress Based on the document ”Priority shortlist of indicators to be computed with the EHIS” Personal characteristics: 6 questions - pending European Health Status Module: 45 questions - completed Determinants of Health: 20 questions - in the making European Health Care Module: 24 questions - in the making

Timeline Reports Draft (11/2010): Missing questions and some examples for EHSM Final (4/2011): Full results with details for each module + examples

The procedure Comparison of questions All national questionnaires translated to English Entered in a table Examined in parallel with original EHIS questions Missing/different questions spotted Classification protocol created Classification of questions in detail

Preliminary results (1) Overview total 20 countries Full EHIS in 13, partial in 7 95 EHIS questions, 20 countries: 1900 national questions (baseline)

Preliminary results (2) Overview EHSM 45 EHIS questions, 20 countries: 900 national questions 62% totally comparable, 26% partially comparable, 12% not comparable or missing In 12 countries all questions totally or partially comparable (in 7 countries: over 90% totally comparable) In 7 countries: over 10% missing

Preliminary results (3) Findings EHSM Missing questions / total difference Different recall period Different / missing / extra specifications Remarkably different question structure Differences in answer options

Preliminary results (4) ”The Comparison Grid” (part)   AT BE BG CY CZ EE FR DE GR HU LT MT NO PL RO SK SI ES CH TR HS.1 HS.2 HS.3 HS.4 -1 -2 -3 -5 -6 -11 -19 HS.5 HS.6 HS.7 HS.8 PL.1 PL.2 PL.3

Discussion Questions raised Is there any need in including Personal Characteristics module in the study? Need to clarify introductions of EHIS questions? More standardisation needed for wave 2?

Next steps Detailed findings: Final report 4/2011 (A. Tuomi-Nikula, S. Ahonen, P. Koponen) to be available at www.euhsid.org
