SECOND THOUGHTS Ms. Rowley’s Weekly Newsletter Vol. 3 Math Reading August 20, 2018 Reminder Snack this week: Charlie Snack next week: Carla Ms. Rowley’s Weekly Newsletter Vol. 3 Math Reading I have completed assessing student reading levels and this week I will begin to expect that students will choose books that are on their reading levels. I will provide them with lists of books that are on their levels. Students should have a book that is on his/her reading level at their desk at all times AND at home at all times. AR will begin in the next week or so. Students will be expected to take AR tests on each of the books that they read. I will continue assessing students on their math skills this week. Students continue to have a problem of the day. We have begun Unit 1 Frameworks in math which focuses on place value and number lines. Science Unit 1 will be about matter. Grammar/Writing Our phonics focus will continue with short vowel sounds. We have started Unit 1 in The Units of Writing, which focuses on writing a narrative. Students will be writing about a “small moment”. We will be setting up our writing folders this week. Social Studies Our first unit is about rules, laws, and government. As we continue to work on learning the rules of the class, we continue to think about, “what if everyone did that?” We will begin learning about our leaders; president, governor, and mayor.

Please check your child’s red Communication Folder every day! Dojo Points Noteworthy Thank you for logging on to Class Dojo. Parents are not permitted to drop students off in the middle parking area for morning drop-off. Students arriving after the 7:45 bell must be escorted in. Students are permitted to enter the school at 7:15 am. (not before) MAP testing for 2nd grade will be Monday-Wednesday of this week. DES has started a new behavior initiative this year called PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System). Students will be awarded points for good behavior and their points will be awarded in the Classroom Dojo platform. Students can earn up to 5 points daily: 1 for behavior in specials, 1 for hallway/restroom behavior, 1 for instructional time, 1 for cafeteria behavior, and 1 for morning meeting. Please check with your child to find out why he/she may not have earned all 5 points each day, or… better yet, reward him/her for getting all 5 points!  Homework Binders Tidbits Changes in your child’s transportation home must be in writing. Please place in your child’s red Parent Communication Folder. No phone calls or e-mails will be accepted. For those of you who would like to join your child for lunch, our lunch time is from 11:42-12:12. Student agendas must remain in the binder and students are expected to write their homework in their agendas each day/week. Homework is usually assigned on Mondays and is due on Fridays. Sometimes students will need to complete classwork that he/she didn’t finish in school for homework. In this case, it will be due on the following day. Homework binders must be brought to school every day. Wish List Thanks to all of you for getting all of the school supplies, right now we are in good shape!!!
