Higher order questions Lesson Topic(s): Science 2nd Grade Week of: 1-7to 1-11, 2019 Objectives: Students will learn about the Arctic region and the animals that live in that region. TEKS: 2.9A basic needs of animals; 2.9B environmental factors; 2.9C living organisms/food chains/camo ELPS: 2E; 2F; 3E;4G;5G Essential Question(s): How does living in the Arctic effect the animals that live there? Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Lesson Plan Map of the Arctic Id. Polar Bear Id. Arctic Fox Id. Walrus Id. Ringed Seal. Vocabulary Arctic Circle North Pole Tundra Magnetic North Compass rose Continents ocean Camouflage Marine mammal Habitat Diet Blubber characteristics land mammal Coat/fur Characteristics Food chain Whiskers/feelers Tusks mammal blubber Higher order questions Analyze the map and explain why a lot of people don’t live in the Arctic Circle. A polar bear is white and so are his surroundings. Explain how this is an advantage for the polar bear. Compare and contrast the fox in the summer vs. winter. Compare your experience with the blubber glove and the cold water to the walrus in the icy water and explain how he stays warm. Compare and contrast the seal and the walrus. Assessment Strategy Students will locate the Arctic on a globe and color a map of the area. Students will use prior knowledge of triangles to reveal the camouflaged polar bear in its surroundings. Make cottonball polar bear. Students will create a fox with a coat that changes with the seasons. Students will use a blubber glove to experience the effects of blubber in cold water. Students will create a ringed seal and add 3D effects.
