Triple Entente (Allied Powers) Great Britain Russia France

Supporters Serbia Belgium Later on US

Triple Alliance (Central Powers) Germany Italy Austria Hungary Ottoman Empire Bulgaria

Why Did They Ally? At first, only Russia, Serbia, France and Great Britain were allies. France Allied with Russia because it is afraid of Italy invading its country. Britain allied with Russia because it was afraid of the invasion from Germany. After Austria humiliated Russia by annexing with Hungary, Russia vowed to support Serbia to invade Hungary to win its pride back. British colonies automatically become allies with the other countries. US Allied with the Triple Entente because it declared war on Germany for attacking Italy allied with Germany because it’s afraid of France’s invasion. Austria Allied with Germany because of threat from Russia.

Relevant Controversies: At first, Britain did not want to be allies with France and Russia because Britain and France were old rivals or competitors. Britain had doubt relying on France for its support. After Britain realized that Germany posted a greater threat, it weighed its pros and cons and decided to ally with the other two countries.

Importance? Alliance played a great role in WW1
