It said that in ancient times in China, there was a ferocious, violent, ugly, single horned beast, with sharp teeth and a long powerful tailed named Nian.

He lived in the deep ocean He lived in the deep ocean. But when the lunar year ended, he came out and went into the villages, destroyed crops, and swallowed people. One year the people were so scared they fled to the remote mountains near them.

He was a Fierce and cruel beast but he was afraid of candlelight, and firecrackers.
