Case Study: INEEL Reactor Release Disaster Behavioral Health Randal Beaton, PhD, EMT Case Study: INEEL Reactor Release

Case Study: INEEL Reactor Release Paralleling the events surrounding the Three Mile Island Nuclear Reactor, the DoE reports that one of the few operating nuclear reactors at INEEL has released a small amount of radioactive material into the atmosphere. What are the behavioral health considerations at this juncture? What is the appropriate health risk communication message?

Case Study: INEEL Reactor Release Due to unanticipated engineering and technological failures, the potential for a much larger release is announced. Evacuation is ordered for a ten square mile area surrounding the reactor. What are the behavioral health considerations now?

Case Study: INEEL Reactor Release The larger release is avoided and the reactor is eventually stabilized. What are the behavioral health implications of this disaster – downstream? Psychoeconomics – property values? How do you address health concerns of citizens about their (very small) exposure?
