Healthy Grocery Shopping: Navigation Tips for Your Shopping Cart FRUIT Fresh Canned Frozen

Variations & Types Fresh Frozen Dried Canned The most accessible, cheapest option. Frozen Limited in the variety of fruits that are frozen. Dried Higher in sugar from the drying process. Canned May lose nutrients in canning process.

Aisle Locations The grocery store staples, such as fresh produce, dairy, and bread can often be found in the perimeter of the store. The frozen food aisle will contain bags of frozen fruit such as blueberries, peaches strawberries, etc. For canned fruit, search an interior aisle of the store.

Fruit Facts The water percentage of fruit is 80% - equal to the water percentage of the human body. Fruit, especially with the skin, contains high levels of dietary fiber. All fruits are 100% cholesterol free. Fruit is low in calories and helps you feel full making it an ideal snack or dessert!

Nutrition Tips Select fruit by the colors of the rainbow. The bolder the color of a fruit, the more nutrient dense it will be. Select a variety of these bold colors. Select sugar free or no added sugar added options of canned fruit. Frozen fruit is extremely fresh because it is flash frozen at peak freshness. Select fruit juices that contain 100% natural fruit juice. Use dried fruit to make tasty trail mixes.

Freshness Tips Shop at local farmer’s markets for the freshest fruit options. Purchase fruit that is in season. Not only will it be cheaper, but it was probably grown locally and not shipped a long distance. Select fruit that is firm and shows no signs of bruising or mold.
