The Slave Trade Slavery existed in Africa before the Europeans Servants, soldiers, farm workers Village raids were done for slaves 15th century Europeans began selling slaves Captured from villages Given by warring tribes Estimations – 10-12 million slaves sent to the Americas

Villages and towns destroyed 2/3 were young strong men (18-30 yrs) Devastated family structures Mid-1700’s – movements to stop slavery By 1808, U.S., G.B., and Denmark outlawed the slave trade

Circle of Slave Trade Africans captured and shipped to Americas Colonies gathered raw materials for mother country – shipped to Europe Europeans produced goods with materials – shipped goods around the world

European Colonialism Africa seen as a source of raw materials and new markets Scientist and explorers were curious about the animals and resources Missionaries interested in African souls Religion, education, medicine European way of thinking destroyed many cultures/traditions

Several European nations competed over territory in Africa Wanted biggest, richest colonies Control of trade European & U.S. leaders met in Berlin 1884 – discussed how to divide Africa 1912 – only Ethiopia and Liberia were independent Belgium, Italy, France, U.K., Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Ottoman Empire had colonies

Impact of Colonial Rule Wanted to make Africans like Europeans Did not understand the rich African culture Made conflicts worse Hutu – Tutsi (Rwanda-Burundi) Belgians treated Tutsi better Violence broke out in 1994 Tutsi formed new government in Rwanda
