Cell Membrane What is it? – Barrier that separates cell from external environment – Composed of two phospholipid layers Other molecules are embedded in.
Movement of Materials Through The Cell Membrane For a cell to maintain its internal environment, (i.e., achieve homeostasis) it has to be selective in.

KEY CONCEPT Materials move across membranes because of concentration differences. 3.4 Diffusion and Osmosis.
PASSIVE TRANSPORT One way cells maintain homeostasis is by controlling the movement of substances across their cell membrane. Cells want to reach “equilibrium”.
Cellular Transport: movement of materials in and out of a cell  Homeostasis: combination of two words  Homeo = same  Stasis = steady  Homeostasis:
 Cell transport is the movement of particles and it takes place because cells are trying to maintain balance (homeostasis).

Presentation transcript:

Monday’s Writing Topic ~ Week 10 ~ Oct. 24 – Oct. 28 ~ List and discuss the different types of passive and active transport mechanisms be sure to: (1) differentiate between active and passive transport with regards to energy, (2) list and define the four types of passive transport, (3) list and define two types of active transport, (4) describe the two types of vesicles and how they differ depending on the material inside them. Describe the mechanisms a cell uses to maintain homeostasis by: (1) define homeostasis, (2) describing why a cells tries to maintain homeostasis, (3) describing two main ways a cell maintains homeostasis (with or without energy), and (4) describing the three different tonicity categories and the resulting movement of water for each category.

Monday’s Vocabulary ~ Week 10 ~ Oct. 24 – Oct. 28 ~ A. Write a definition for each of the terms below Homeostasis Passive transport Hypotonic solution Active transport Hypertonic solution Exocytosis Isotonic solution Endocytosis Osmosis Ion channels Diffusion Carrier proteins
