Forms of Energy Unit 3 Part 2 Vocabulary

Chemical energy Energy that is stored in matter and can be released during a chemical reaction

Electricity Energy caused by movement of electrical charges

Mechanical energy The combination of the potential and kinetic energy an object contains

Thermal energy the total kinetic energy of the particles in matter

Energy transformation The process through which energy can change from one form to another

Heat What your body feels thermal energy as

Temperature The measure of the energy of motion in the particles of matter, which we feel as how hot or cold something is

conduct To transmit heat or electricity through a material or substance

Insulator A material used to reduce or prevent the transfer of electricity, heat, or sound

Conductor A material that readily allows electric charges to pass through it and therefore carries electricity well

Open circuit When the path along which electric charges normally flow is not complete

Closed Circuit A path that forms a complete loop along which electric charges can flow
