AKC Pet Disaster Program An exciting way to give back to the community

What is AKC Disaster Relief? AKC Pet Disaster Relief helps local Emergency Management provide animal care services during the first critical hours following a disaster… the time before FEMA support and services are deployed.  Deployment of disaster relief trailers will help put an end to post-disaster tragedies that have historically affected pet owners, such as: putting themselves in harm’s way to save a beloved pet, or even losing a family pet during a disaster. We want every community to be prepared to help people and their pets for any disaster and its aftermath.  That is why AKC Reunite is partnering with AKC Clubs and their affiliates to raise funds to help supply AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailers to local Emergency Management.

What AKC Reunite hopes to accomplish? Better community preparedness More successful local disaster response Heightened awareness of the importance of disaster preparedness for their pets Peace of mind for pet owners –   Safe, healthy sheltering environment that includes their pets –   Happy reunions for separated animals and their human companions despite the chaos around them Lives will be saved

Pet Disaster Relief Trailers AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailers are stocked with essential, nonperishable necessities for sheltering pets.  The supplies can be used to create a safe, temporary home-base for displaced animals.

How does it work?

How does it work? The AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer is stocked with essential supplies to house at least 65 pets the first 72 hours after a disaster is declared.  The trailer has lighting and is wired for electricity, to run off either a generator or 110v power supply. Its contents are stocked with necessary supplies. Trailer cost approximately $22,000.

Following is a sampling of typical trailer contents: Administrative  Supplies:  Log books, Volunteer registration forms, wrist/collar bands, check-in materials Maintenance Equipment:  Batteries, Gas Can, Duct Tape Animal Care:  Crates packed on rolling dollies for easy set-up, cat carriers,; litter, microchips and scanner, bowls, collars and leashes Equipment:  Fans, Generator, Lighting, Hose Cleaning Supplies:  Mop, trash can, tarps, litter boxes, disinfectants Access to training materials:  Turnkey implementation of Co-Located Shelters and Pop-up Reunion Centers, Volunteer Mobilization, Decontamination and Replenishment

AKC Reunite Program Resources

Program Resources Regardless of the size or budget of a community, local Emergency Management is now required by law to prepare and care for its citizens – including plans to accommodate people with their pets in the event of a disaster.  To successfully meet these newer legal requirements, government organizations cannot alone meet the challenges posed by a catastrophe.

What can The Welsh Springer Spaniel Club of America do to help? The WSSCA can register with AKC Reunite to create a fund for the WSSCA which will serve as a depository for our members including friends and family and all associated local community pet related businesses to donate. The WSSCA can educate and promote this worthy cause to it members through a direct mail campaign and through the newsletter plus meeting reminders. The WSSCA can educate and promote this worthy cause to all animal related businesses and associations in local communities. The WSSCA could even join with other Parent or Local Clubs to form an alliance to support one or more trailers. AKC Reunite is a 501(c)3 non profit organization. Donations are tax deductible and accepted online or via the AKC Pet Disaster Relief Donation Form. If you are a pet lover concerned about the well-being of pets during disasters please consider making a donation.

Begin Fund Raising Showcase your organization’s commitment to assisting pet owners and their animal companions.  So your fundraising efforts can be allocated toward your club or local giving initiative, register your Club or Local Community Organization with AKC Reunite.     Approved entities that raise a minimum of $1,000 can have their logo featured on a trailer.  Individuals can also make donations and reference their club to help the organization meet their specific fundraising goals.  To help mobilize AKC Pet Disaster Relief, AKC Reunite has allocated $250,000 over the next two years to assist AKC Clubs’ fundraising efforts. AKC Reunite grants are available.

Get Recognized for Your Contributions $1,000 = one 10 inch logo $2,500 = two 12 inch logos $5,000 = two 18 inch logos $10,000 = two 24 inch logos Eligible donations of $2,500 or greater will have their logo featured on both sides of the trailer.
