Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center Role of the CASC is to provide science to address climate needs and related decisions Formal partnership between a research institution (UAF) and the federal gov (USGS) Created in 2010 as part of a national network; there eight CASC across the US Tribal Liaison position – created thru a cooperative agreement between BIA, APIA and AK CASC CASC provide resource managers, tribes and other stakeholders with information and decision-making tools to respond to the effects of climate change on fish, wildlife, ecosystems, and the communities they support.

Tribal Liaisons Role Climate-resilient tribal communities Climate change increasingly threatens Indigenous communities’ livelihoods, economies, health, and cultural identities by disrupting interconnected social, physical, and ecological systems. -Fourth National Climate Assessment Finding 7 To help tribes access (and make sense of) information, data and expertise at the CASCs Connect to / facilitate research Assist with information exchange and coordinate forums Climate change is affecting Alaska in profound ways that require innovative approaches to research. Research projects supported by the Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center often cross several disciplines in order to broadly address ecosystem responses to climate change.  Part of a national network Resilience – Ability to come back, bounce back from

Specialist. Indigenous communities across the U.S. are at various stages of addressing climate impacts. Many Indigenous communities across the U.S. have proactively identified and planned for climate change impacts, while some communities are at the early stages of assessment and planning efforts. The TRP is only a few years old, but the focus of the investments has always been on planning, training, helping tribes better understand their vulnerability to climate, and providing data and tools so you can incorporate climate into the programs. We assume that by considering climate change early on in the lives of you pgms/projects, your program will be more resilient to climate change and other environmental changes. BIA’s support for climate adaptation falls into two categories. Funding for tribes and technical support http://www.occri.net/projects/tribal-climate-adaptation-guidebook/
