I am African American…. And was probably born in 1742 and I died in December of 1829, to enslaved African parents in Claverack, New York. At the age of six months I was purchased, along with my sister, by John Ashley of Sheffield, Massachusetts, whom I served until I was nearly forty.

I was …… a women with a strength of character that impressed everyone. I got married at a young age at which I had a baby girl. I became a widow after my husband was killed fighting for the Patriots side in the war for Independence.

I ….. Was called “Mum Bett.” I listened to my master as he read about the Bill of Rights and I decided that if all people were born free and equal, then the laws must apply to me as well.

Who am I…… I am Elizabeth Freeman.
