Fig. 1 Four of the subunits in the hexameric ring formed by TrwB are shown, with each subunit in a different color. The integral membrane portion of the ring was not present in the crystal, but would be at the bottom of the figure. Single-stranded DNA is apparently pumped through the central channel in an ATP-dependent manner during bacterial conjugation. (Figure courtesy of Miquel Coll.)
