I can differentiate between a physical & chemical property of a substance.
Create a T-Chart on page 25. Physical Properties Chemical Properties The appearance has changed in some way, but not the composition. ex: ripping paper Characteristics that can’t be observed without altering the substance. ex: how something smells, looks, sounds, or tastes are all physical properties. Another way to look at chemical properties is the ability of a substance to undergo a change that alters its identity. When describing the physical properties of an item don’t forget its state—solid, liquid or gas Nothing happens looking at the matches Ability to burn is a chemical property Matches are permanently changed after they are burned. Volume, mass, and weight are all physical properties that depends on the size of an object. ex: the bigger the object, the more its mass, volume, and weight. Density is also a physical property but it does not depend on the size of the object. Density measures how heavy something is for its size.
More Physical Properties Melting and Boiling Point Does not depend on an object’s size solid liquid Melting point: temperature that a solid changes into a liquid. liquid gas Boiling point: temperature at which a liquid changes into a gas. Magnetic Properties the ability of an object to pull iron towards them are said to be magnetic. Also does not depend on an object’s size.

Your Turn…
How’d ya do?
Exit Ticket Number from 1-8, Write T for True or F for False. (make sure I can tell the difference!) 1. A physical property can be observed with your senses. 2. State, density, melting point, and boiling point are chemical properties. 3. Mass, weight, and volume are size-dependent properties. 4. A change of state (solid to liquid) is a chemical change. 5. A cake being cut is a chemical change. 6. A candle burning is a chemical change. 7. A jeweler bending a gold ring is a physical change. 8. The ability to burn is a chemical change.
