Essential Question How was Songhai’s success and decline related to economic decisions?

Essential Standard 6.H.2.1  Explain how invasions, conquests, and migrations affected various civilizations, societies, and regions. 6.E.1.1  Explain how conflict, compromise, and negotiation over the availability of resources impacted the economic development of various civilizations, societies and regions.

SLIDE ONE Songhai was a fishing village in the Mali Empire. Like all villages, they were allowed to have their own local government. Mali wanted them to pay taxes like all the villages in the empire. But Songhai refused. They were fiercely independent. Mali let them get away it because they wanted the fish. Songhai did a great job catching and trading fish.

SKIT ONE Mali: Pay your taxes. Songhai: No. Mali: Why? Songhai: Because I do not have to. Mali: Why don’t you have to. Songhai: Because I give you a lot of fish. Mali: Wow you are right. You do bring us a lot of fish. Songhai: Do I have to still pay taxes? Mali: Will you give me fish? Songhai: Yes. Mali: Then you do not have to pay taxes. Songhai: I thought so.

What type of village was Songhai? Why did Mali allow Songhai get away without paying taxes?

SLIDE 2 Slowly, Songhai developed a strong army and a central government. The nobles were Muslim. The common people believed in the old gods. The lifestyle of the nobles and the common people began to change. The nobles became rich and comfortable. The common people were poor and did all the work.

SKIT TWO Character 1: It is not right. Character 2: What? Character 1: That we do the work. Character 2: Somebody has to do it. Character 1: But the rich are comfortable. I think the ones that do the work should be the ones that are comfortable. Character 2: If we were rich, we would be comfortable. But we are not so we have to work. Character 1: I am going to be rich one day. Character 2: yeah right. Character 1: I will. Character 2: The poor stay poor and the rich stay rich. Character 1: I will be rich one day. Character 2:No you will not.

How do you think the common people felt towards the nobles How do you think the common people felt towards the nobles? Why do you think this?

SLIDE 3 As Mali weakened, Songhai started to take charge of West Africa.  The first king of the new Songhai Empire was Sonni Ali the Great. Sonni Ali was a strong leader. He wanted to expand the Songhai Empire as rapidly as possible. To do so, he sent warriors, in canoes, up and down the waterways, to take over small towns and villages. The villages were glad to see them. They wanted someone in charge who had a strong army to protect them.

Do press conference for Sonni Ali.

1. What is your name. 2. Which kingdom did you lead. 3 1. What is your name? 2. Which kingdom did you lead? 3. Where is Songhai located? 4. What did you do to expand Songhai? 5. What did you do with Songhai? 1. Sonni Ali 2. Songhai 3. West Africa 4. Took over villages 5. expand it.

Slide 4 As Songhai grew, Sonni Ali sent warriors to take over landlocked cities, such as the city of Timbuktu. It was no long until Songhai had grown into the largest kingdom in West Africa. At one point, Songhai stretched 2,000 miles along the west African coast. They soon controlled all the gold mines in the south, and all the salt mines in the north. That gave them incredible power with the traders from the other side of the Sahara.

Upon his death, Sunni Ali left rule of his kingdom to his son Upon his death, Sunni Ali left rule of his kingdom to his son. Sunni Ali was Muslim, but his son was not. The people rebelled against their new non-muslim king, and instead installed their own king, a man named Askia Muhammad. In 1528 A.D., Muhammad was overthrown by his son. Following this event, the Kingdom of Songhai entered a period of war and decline. This war weakened the kingdom so that by 1589 A.D. they were unable to defend themselves against invading armies from Morocco.

Questions Why did the people rebel against Sunni Ali’s son? What happen to Muhammad in 1528? Where did the invading armies come from?

Name 1 thing you learned about Songhai.
